Blow Thy Winter Wind - Raw

I caught a cold and have found no creative time this weekend as I had hoped. So, for now, I’ll post a recording of Sepidah Moafi and Jonathan Shue performing “Blow Blow Thy Winter Wind (Hey Ho The Holy)” that I’m using as the basis for my souped up and produced version that I’ll post on this site soon.

In Previews

I’m sitting at my tech table in row H seat 214 watching Rick and our actors refine the Rosalind/Orlando courtship scenes.

Previews are a wonderful gift if you can get them. Watching the show before a live audience a few times is a fantastic way to gauge what works and what needs help. Each preview gets better from my vantage. The show is becoming clearer to all of us.

I’m not ashamed to say that I’ve been living with this show for about a month now and I’m still finding new intrigue in the show. New insights. New wonder.

As for the sound design, I’ve added a few “babbling brook” sounds for today’s performance. I think it sound work especially well for the “sermons in stones” speech. A few more tweeting bird sounds as well. I’m hoping it will ground us in the forest a bit more…

I think it’s safe to say that I can UPS my keyboard back to Atlanta and save the theater a bit of money rather than taking it on the plane with me. $175 is now the charge for an oversized bag on Delta. Damn!

My wife and babyciao are headed out here tomorrow I can’t wait to see them. My sister and her family are on their way down from Eureka on Friday for opening night, add my brother and his wife, and my DAD who hasn’t seen a show that I’ve been a part of since I was in high school, and I have a family reunion at hand n the next few days.

Wedding Dance - v2.0

Here is a revised version of the wedding dance sequence. The job here is to play the individual couples as they dance in this order (every 4 bars):

1. Orlando and Rosalind (Harp)
2. Celia and Oliver (Salsa Piano)
3. Phebe and Silvus (Pedal Steel)
4. Touchstone and Audrey (Circus Music)

After the individual dances the women have a dance routine for 8 measures and then the whole thing ends with a kiss from Orlando and Rosalind…

Almost there...

Our two 10 ot of 12’s (We’re called for 12 hours and work for 10 of them with a 2 hour dinner break) are done and we’ve been through the entire show now at least one time with sets, costumes, projection, lights, sound, acting, and music…

One thing that it’s always fun to see in tech is the costume design. After all the work you see the actors and director do in rehearsal, a good costume design (like the one we have in this show) is like a beautiful frosting job on a tasty cake! It helps really bring the show to life…

While I’m at the theater I’m finding it hard to post status updates, but I did write a little something while I waited for some rehearsing to happen yesterday.

Here’s my 20:

I have two networked computers in front of me. The one on the left is the show control computer and the one on the right is my laptop, loaded with LOGIC and hooked up to a piano keyboard.

I write the cues on my laptop in Lgoic and then bounce them into Peak where I cut the fat, normalize, and resave them.

I then save the Peak file to a folder with the today’s date on it, which is echoed on the show control computer.

I then drag the finished file onto the show control computer and then drop them into Qlab and set levels in the house.

As far as the house is concerned I’m dealing with 12 channels. They are as follows

1. House LEft
2. House RIght
3. House Center
4. Subs
5. Left Surround
6. Right Surround
7. Upstage Right
8. Upstage Left
9. Stage Left (Behind Screen)
10. Center Sage (Behind Screen)
11. Stage Right (Behind Screen)
12. Our Firepit (Localized Speaker)

Today we aren’t called until 1:30 so I’m going to explore San Jose a little more. Tonight at 7:30 is our final dress rehearsal, so I really have today and tomorrow to make easy changes to the show before we get it in front of an audience.

So that’s the haps. I’m going to try and post the updated dance sequence here in a minute to give ya’ll some idea of what I’ve been doing the past few days…

Our cast is brilliant! I also forgot how sharp Rick is in rehearsal. He has laser focus and helps the actors craft their scenes in the best way possible…

There’s an actor here named Steve Irish who is truly hilarious as Touchstone!

Getting situated

Waking up and getting my bearings here in San Jose. I brought my Radium 61 to set up in my room. Along with my laptop and a pair of headphones I have an in room studio!

San Jose seems like a fun place to be the next few weeks! I’m bordering a big park ringed by restaurants and shops. Sharon, SJRep’s Company Manager, took me on a little tour of downtown last night after I got in, and I’m jealous that Atlanta doesn’t have a city center anywhere near as nice as this one.

I’m sure I’ll be posting picutres and videos as my time here goes on, but right now, I need to find some food!
