My final video update for my “As You Like It” Music/Sound blog #ayli #fb
In Previews
I’m sitting at my tech table in row H seat 214 watching Rick and our actors refine the Rosalind/Orlando courtship scenes.
Previews are a wonderful gift if you can get them. Watching the show before a live audience a few times is a fantastic way to gauge what works and what needs help. Each preview gets better from my vantage. The show is becoming clearer to all of us.
I’m not ashamed...

Almost there...
Our two 10 ot of 12’s (We’re called for 12 hours and work for 10 of them with a 2 hour dinner break) are done and we’ve been through the entire show now at least one time with sets, costumes, projection, lights, sound, acting, and music…
One thing that it’s always fun to see in tech is the costume design. After all the work you see the actors and director do in...

Day 1 jetlagged report from San Jose.
Rehearsal note:
Pg 9: Rick wants an iPhone camera shutter click. I wonder how I can liberate that caf file from my iPhone.
Our cast is brilliant! I also forgot how sharp Rick is in rehearsal. He has laser focus and helps the actors craft their scenes in the best way possible…
There’s an actor here named Steve Irish who is truly hilarious as Touchstone!
Getting situated
Waking up and getting my bearings here in San Jose. I brought my Radium 61 to set up in my room. Along with my laptop and a pair of headphones I have an in room studio!
San Jose seems like a fun place to be the next few weeks! I’m bordering a big park ringed by restaurants and shops. Sharon, SJRep’s Company Manager, took me on a little tour of downtown last night after I got in, and...

I’m tryin a video update this time instead of a text update…
Totally awesome
I just finished up a really remarkable web video conference where I could see and hear our musician/actor/geniuses at work in San Jose, while I was able to sit on my bed in Atlanta and answer questions.
We pulled this off with TokBox and a landline connection for sound.
Tonight we rehearsed “Blow, Blow Thy Winter Wind” which is now in Am, as well as “Greenwood Tree” which...
Evolution
I heard back from two of our musician/actor/geniuses today. Here’s what our soprano, Sepidah Moafi had to say
“I was wondering if we could experiment with raising Under the Greenwood Tree by a Major 3rd. I sang through it a bit today, and wanted to know what you think. I like the A Major version, but I feel a little more comfy in a C Major. I am also exhausted from no sleep for the...
Hey maybe we should do like these guys and go METAL SHAKESPEARE!

Inadequacy and Accordians
So It turns out that this TokBox can do two way embeddable video up right! Now, I can send short vids to Rick and he can send short vids back! Let’s see if this goes anywhere, I don’t want to make Rick or anyone else feel uncomftrable here, I just want to fully document my experience with this show…
Speaking of which, last night I finally got in touch with our three musicians in...

On paper at least...
I stayed in all weekend to play with our 4 month old and get all these songs arranged and on paper at least.
Mission accomplished thus far. Rehearsals start on Tuesday in San Jose.
Rick and I have talked a bit about finding a way for me to see what they’re doing in rehearsal using webcams and the like. I’m suggesting we go the Google Talk route because I’m a Mac and...

Song Chart - Blow Thy Winter Wind

This score contains parts for drums, voice, and guitar.
In case our actor/player/geniuses aren’t jazzers, the slashes just mean “follow the groove” for rhythm insturments, and are meant as a leader of harmonic rhythm for tonal insturments. In other words, just comp.

Song Chart - Hey Nonino

This score contains parts for drums, voice, and accordian.
Feel free to add guitar as well by simply following along with the chords on the accordian part.
NOTE: Rick and I have discussed the staging of this song, at the end, to include Audrey’s voice. As of right now, I’m waiting to see a rehearsal video or be present at a webcast to see how this idea...
Writing it down
As you can see, I’ve spent the past few days getting these 5 songs into some sort of tangible shape so our musician/actor/genuises can read and interpret them.
As I do this, I’m reminded how much of a geek I am for music theory. It’s such a great language! So fun, and so vast!
Anyhow, yesterday afternoon my goal was to write one last song, and then notate 5 songs and put them...

Spanning Centuries
This last version of “Blow Thy Winter Wind” is so vastly different from anything else in the show to me, but I have to imagine the way our actor/singers will play it, and I have a feeling in their voices and fingers it will sound natural.
Again, the more time I spend with Shakespeare, the more I get out of it. It’s fun to collaborate across the span of centuries!
Assuing that...

Director's notes
Just got off the phone with Rick. He had a couple of notes for me.
1. Hey Nonino can have Accordian, hand drums, guitar and two mens voices. THEN, we can add a womans voice as well at the end. Rick will play with the scene and I will try and keep up from Atlanta.
2. In the Forester’s Song the line: “thy father’s father wore it, and thy father bore it,” needs to be more...
